SWISS International Air Lines has introduced its new Airbus A350-900 aircraft with the redesigned SWISS Senses cabin on its daily Zurich–Johannesburg route, giving passengers traveling between Switzerland and South Africa access to the airline’s latest long-haul experience.
The aircraft began operating on the route on October 25, 2026, replacing the Airbus A340-300 previously used on the service. The move is part of SWISS’s broader long-haul fleet modernization program, which combines a new cabin design with more fuel-efficient aircraft.
A New Cabin Experience Between Zurich and Johannesburg
The new SWISS Senses cabin covers all four travel classes: First Class, Business Class, Premium Economy and Economy. The design focuses on passenger comfort, privacy, lighting and updated onboard technology.
Johannesburg is among the first destinations to receive the new cabin on regular long-haul services. SWISS has also introduced the Airbus A350-900 on routes from Zurich to Boston and Seoul, while selected flights to Shanghai are scheduled to receive the aircraft during the 2026–2027 winter timetable.
The Johannesburg service operates daily. SWISS’s A350-900 is configured for 242 passengers, comprising three First Class seats, 45 Business Class seats, 38 Premium Economy seats and 156 Economy seats.
Private Suites and Redesigned Business Class
One of the most notable changes is in First Class, where SWISS introduces fully enclosed private suites. The Single Suite is designed for individual travelers, while the Suite Plus option allows two passengers to share a more private space.
Business Class features several seating options, including a Business Suite with closable doors. All Business Class seats provide direct aisle access and convert into fully flat beds, while selected seats offer additional space or extra bed length.
The updated cabin is designed to give travelers more choice, whether they prioritize privacy, sleeping comfort or additional personal space on the overnight journey between Europe and southern Africa.
Upgrades in Premium Economy and Economy
The changes also extend to passengers traveling outside the premium cabins. SWISS Premium Economy offers a redesigned seat, a privacy-focused headrest and a personal entertainment screen.
In Economy Class, passengers receive updated seating features, adjustable headrests, charging connections and individual entertainment screens. The airline has also redesigned cabin materials and lighting to create a more consistent experience throughout the aircraft.
SWISS says the cabin concept includes human-centric lighting intended to support passengers’ body clocks, alongside improved cabin air quality and a quieter onboard environment.
A More Efficient Aircraft Replaces the Airbus A340
The Airbus A350-900 is a twin-engine wide-body aircraft designed for long-distance operations. Its modern engines, aerodynamic design and extensive use of advanced materials help reduce fuel consumption and emissions compared with previous-generation aircraft.
Replacing the four-engine Airbus A340-300 with the A350 is part of SWISS’s effort to modernize its long-haul fleet. The airline plans to add a total of ten new Airbus A350-900 aircraft by 2030.
SWISS is also preparing to extend the new cabin experience to its existing fleet. The first Airbus A330-300 is undergoing cabin refurbishment, with the airline targeting completion of the A330 fleet-wide rollout by mid-2028. The Boeing 777 fleet is also expected to receive the new cabin progressively.
What the Change Means for Travelers
For passengers flying between Johannesburg and Zurich, the A350 introduces a new cabin layout and updated onboard features across all four classes. The route also provides connections through Zurich to destinations across Europe and the wider SWISS network.
However, travelers should check the aircraft assigned to their specific departure. Airline schedules and aircraft rotations can change, and the introduction of the A350 does not guarantee that every future flight will operate with the same aircraft.
Passengers can check schedules, fares and cabin options through the official SWISS website.
