Air Canada is removing five routes between Canada and the United States from its upcoming flight schedules, reducing nonstop travel options on several transborder services in 2027.
The changes affect connections from Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver to Seattle, Boston, Charleston, Nashville and Raleigh-Durham. However, the airline is also planning new services to other U.S. destinations, meaning the changes represent a reshaping of its network rather than a complete withdrawal from the American market.
Which Air Canada Routes Are Being Cancelled?
The five affected routes are:
- Montreal–Seattle: The planned return of the service in May 2027 has been removed from the schedule.
- Toronto Billy Bishop–Boston: The service is scheduled to end on December 1, 2026.
- Toronto Pearson–Charleston: The airline will not resume the planned seasonal service in spring 2027.
- Vancouver–Nashville: The planned seasonal service for 2027 has been removed.
- Vancouver–Raleigh-Durham: The planned return of the route in 2027 has also been cancelled.
The changes were reported by Canadian aviation publications using updated airline schedules and information from Air Canada. The airline has described its network adjustments as commercial decisions.
Why Is Air Canada Reducing Some U.S. Services?
Canadian media reports have pointed to weaker demand on certain routes and higher fuel costs as factors behind the changes. Air Canada has said that it regularly reviews its schedules to ensure that capacity reflects customer demand and travel patterns.
Airlines frequently adjust routes when passenger numbers, operating expenses or seasonal demand make a service less attractive commercially. Removing a route from the schedule does not necessarily mean that a destination will become inaccessible to the airline's customers.
In this case, several of the affected U.S. cities will continue to have Air Canada connections from other Canadian airports.
What Are the Alternatives for Travellers?
Passengers planning trips to the affected cities should check their departure airport carefully before booking.
- Seattle: Air Canada continues to serve Seattle from other Canadian gateways, including Vancouver and Toronto Pearson.
- Boston: Services remain available from Montreal, Halifax and Toronto Pearson.
- Nashville: Travellers can look for Air Canada flights from Montreal or Toronto Pearson.
- Raleigh-Durham: Connections from Montreal and Toronto Pearson remain options.
- Charleston: The route change is more significant for Air Canada passengers because Charleston is the only one of the five destinations that will lose its direct Air Canada service from Canadian airports.
Availability depends on the travel date and the airline's published schedule. Passengers with existing bookings should contact Air Canada or check their reservation directly for information about any changes to their itinerary.
Air Canada Is Also Adding New U.S. Routes
Despite the cancellations, Air Canada is planning to introduce three new U.S. routes for the 2027 summer season:
- Toronto Pearson–Louisville: Planned to begin on April 28, 2027.
- Montreal–Indianapolis: Planned to begin on June 1, 2027.
- Edmonton–Newark: Planned to begin on June 1, 2027.
The airline also plans to increase capacity between Edmonton and San Francisco by using larger Airbus A220 aircraft.
These additions show that Air Canada is continuing to invest in selected U.S. markets while removing routes that no longer fit its commercial plans.
What This Means for Air Travellers
The latest schedule changes underline the importance of checking direct-flight availability before making travel plans. A route that appeared in an airline's schedule earlier in the year may not operate as originally planned.
Travellers should compare alternative departure airports and connecting flights, particularly when planning trips to smaller U.S. cities. They should also verify flight dates directly with the airline before booking hotels or other non-refundable travel arrangements.
Air Canada's network changes are part of the ongoing adjustment of cross-border air services between Canada and the United States. While some nonstop routes are disappearing, new services are planned for other markets in 2027.
