Airlines across Japan and Taiwan are adjusting flight schedules as Super Typhoon Champi approaches the region, prompting confirmed cancellations and travel warnings for passengers flying over the coming days.
According to an update published by Taiwan's Central News Agency (CNA) on October 21, China Airlines and Tigerair Taiwan announced cancellations affecting several routes between Taiwan and Okinawa on Thursday, October 22. Other airlines have warned that additional changes may be necessary depending on the storm's movement.
China Airlines and Tigerair Taiwan Cancel Flights
China Airlines confirmed cancellations affecting flights between Taoyuan and Okinawa, Taichung and Okinawa, and Kaohsiung and Okinawa on October 22.
The affected services include CI122/CI123 between Taoyuan and Okinawa, CI312/CI313 between Taichung and Okinawa, and CI132/CI133 between Kaohsiung and Okinawa. The airline also announced an earlier departure for flights CI310/CI311 between Taichung and Okinawa.

Passengers should check the latest flight information directly with their airline before leaving for the airport.
Japan Faces Further Disruptions
Japan's major airlines have also issued operational warnings as the typhoon approaches the country's southern islands.
All Nippon Airways (ANA) warned that flights to and from Okinawa Naha, Miyako and Ishigaki could be affected on October 22 and 23. The airline reported that some services to and from Miyako and Ishigaki had already been canceled, with all flights to and from those two airports scheduled for cancellation on October 23 according to its October 21 update.
Japan Airlines (JAL) also warned of widespread cancellations affecting several island airports, including Tokunoshima, Okinoerabu, Yoron, Miyako, Tarama, Ishigaki and Yonaguni. The list of affected airports varies by date, and further decisions depend on updated weather conditions.
These measures may change as airlines continue to monitor the storm.
EVA Air Issues Travel Advisory
Taiwan-based EVA Air announced that some flights to and from Taiwan and Japan could be affected by Typhoon Champi in the coming days.
In its October 21 notice, the airline advised passengers to check their flight status before heading to the airport and consult its official website for the latest information about rebooking and refunds.
What Passengers Should Do
Travelers scheduled to fly between Taiwan and Japan from October 22 onward should take the following precautions:
- Check their flight status on the airline's official website or mobile application.
- Monitor email and text-message notifications for schedule changes.
- Review the airline's rebooking and refund conditions if their flight is affected.
- Avoid traveling to the airport until they have confirmed the status of their booking.
Airlines may offer flexible rebooking or refund options under their published travel advisories. The exact conditions depend on the carrier, route and ticket.
More Flight Changes Could Follow
With Typhoon Champi approaching, the operational situation remains subject to change. Further cancellations, delays or schedule adjustments may be announced as updated forecasts become available.
Passengers should rely on direct airline notifications and official airport information rather than assuming that a previously scheduled flight will operate as planned.
