Pakistan Extends Airspace Ban on Indian Aircraft Until November 24, 2026

ISLAMABAD, October 22, 2026 — Pakistan has extended its airspace ban on Indian aircraft until November 24, 2026, continuing restrictions that have forced Indian airlines to reroute some international flights and absorb additional operating costs.

The Pakistan Airports Authority issued a new Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) on October 17, extending the existing restrictions beyond their previous expiry date of October 24. The latest notice remains in effect until 4:59 a.m. Pakistan Standard Time on November 24, according to reports published by Pakistani news outlets. Dawn reported the extension.

Which Aircraft Are Affected?

The restriction applies to aircraft registered in India, as well as aircraft owned, operated or leased by Indian airlines and operators. Military flights are also included in the notice.

The ban covers Pakistan's Karachi and Lahore flight information regions, which encompass the country's airspace. The latest extension continues a policy introduced in April 2025 amid deteriorating relations between India and Pakistan.

Longer Routes Increase Airline Costs

Avoiding Pakistani airspace can force Indian airlines to take longer routes on certain international services, particularly flights travelling west towards Europe and other destinations. The additional distance can increase flight times and fuel consumption, adding pressure to airline operating costs.

The impact varies by route, departure airport, destination and available alternative flight paths. Not every international flight operated by an Indian airline will necessarily experience the same delay or additional distance.

Previous reporting has highlighted the financial consequences for Air India, which operates an extensive international network. The airline has previously reported substantial additional costs associated with the restrictions.

A Dispute Dating Back to 2025

India and Pakistan imposed reciprocal airspace restrictions in April 2025 after tensions escalated following the deadly Pahalgam attack in Indian-administered Kashmir. India accused Pakistan of involvement, an allegation Islamabad denied.

The restrictions have been renewed repeatedly since then. Their continuation illustrates how diplomatic and security tensions can affect commercial aviation well beyond the countries directly involved.

What Does This Mean for Passengers?

Travellers booked on Indian airlines should check their flight status and any schedule changes directly with their carrier, particularly when travelling on international routes that may require detours.

The latest extension does not automatically mean that all flights to or from Pakistan will be cancelled. The notice specifically identifies Indian aircraft and aircraft associated with Indian airlines and operators. Other airlines must follow the restrictions applicable to their own operations.

Will Pakistan Extend the Ban Again?

The current notice sets November 24, 2026, as the scheduled end date. However, the restrictions could be extended or amended through a subsequent official aviation notice. Airlines and passengers should therefore check the latest information before making travel decisions.

For passengers: Confirm departure times, connection arrangements and possible itinerary changes with the operating airline before travelling to the airport.
