KLM Launches First Airbus A350 Flight to Toronto

AMSTERDAM — KLM has launched its first commercial passenger flight with the Airbus A350-900, marking a major milestone in the Dutch airline's long-haul fleet renewal programme.

The aircraft began passenger operations on October 30, 2026, operating flight KL691 from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol to Toronto Pearson International Airport in Canada.

The introduction of the A350 represents an important step in KLM's plan to modernise its intercontinental fleet with newer, more fuel-efficient aircraft.

Toronto Becomes the First A350 Destination

Toronto is the first destination selected for KLM's new Airbus A350-900. The airline plans to operate the aircraft on the Amsterdam-Toronto route up to five times per week initially.

The service operates under flight numbers KL691 from Amsterdam to Toronto and KL692 on the return journey.

KLM's winter schedule includes 12 weekly flights between Amsterdam and Toronto, with five operated by the A350. The airline plans to increase A350 operations to a daily service from March 3, 2027.

More Destinations Planned for the Airbus A350

Toronto is only the beginning of the aircraft's deployment across KLM's international network.

According to the airline's winter schedule and updated operational filings, the A350 is also planned for several destinations in Canada and Africa.

  • Montreal: Planned A350 operations three times weekly during selected periods, including December 14, 2026 to January 1, 2027, and March 1 to March 26, 2027.
  • Kilimanjaro and Dar es Salaam: The Amsterdam-Kilimanjaro-Dar es Salaam-Amsterdam service is scheduled to introduce the A350 from December 15, 2026.
  • Zanzibar and Dar es Salaam: A second African routing via Zanzibar is scheduled to begin on December 20, 2026.
  • Nairobi: A350 services are planned to start on January 5, 2027, with three weekly flights.

These deployment dates reflect the latest available schedule information and may be adjusted by the airline.

Inside KLM's First Airbus A350-900

KLM's first A350-900, registered as PH-ZNA, is named De Nachtwacht, or The Night Watch, after the famous painting by Dutch artist Rembrandt.

The aircraft has a three-class configuration with 331 seats:

  • World Business Class: 34 seats
  • Premium Comfort: 26 seats
  • Economy Class: 271 seats

The aircraft features Airbus' Airspace cabin, designed to provide a more comfortable long-haul travel experience, with improved cabin lighting, larger luggage compartments and modern passenger facilities.

A Step in KLM's Fleet Renewal Programme

The arrival of the A350 is part of KLM's wider fleet modernisation strategy. The aircraft is designed to improve fuel efficiency and reduce noise compared with previous-generation widebody aircraft.

Airbus says the A350 incorporates advanced aerodynamics, lightweight materials and next-generation engines to improve operating efficiency and reduce emissions.

For KLM, introducing the aircraft is intended to strengthen its long-haul operations while gradually renewing its older aircraft fleet.

What Comes Next?

With Toronto now receiving KLM's first A350 passenger service, the aircraft is expected to appear on additional routes as more aircraft join the airline's fleet.

The planned expansion to Montreal and several African destinations will give passengers more opportunities to travel on KLM's newest long-haul aircraft during the 2026/2027 winter season.

The introduction of the A350 also marks a new chapter in KLM's long-standing international operations from Amsterdam Schiphol.
