AIRLINE NEWS | October 20, 2026
Finnair is preparing to launch its first Australian route, introducing daily flights between Helsinki and Melbourne via Bangkok from October 25, 2026. The new long-haul service will use an Airbus A350 and give travellers a new connection between Australia, Northern Europe and destinations across Finnair's European network.
Important status update: As of October 20, the service is announced and available for booking, but its scheduled launch date is still in the future. The first Helsinki departure is planned for October 25, subject to the applicable approvals and any subsequent schedule changes.
When Does the New Finnair Route Start?
Finnair has scheduled the first departure from Helsinki for October 25, 2026, at the beginning of the 2026–2027 winter aviation season. The airline announced the route in December 2025 and subsequently published further information about how the service will operate.
The planned frequency is one flight daily in each direction. The service is designed to connect passengers travelling between Melbourne and Helsinki, while also offering onward connections through Finnair's Helsinki hub to destinations across Europe.
Route: Helsinki (HEL) – Bangkok (BKK) – Melbourne (MEL)
Planned start: October 25, 2026, departing Helsinki
Frequency: Daily
Aircraft: Airbus A350
Operating status: Announced; first flight scheduled for October 25
Why Does the Flight Stop in Bangkok?
Although the Helsinki–Melbourne service is sold as a direct flight, it includes a technical stop in Bangkok. Finnair says the route is operated using the same aircraft and flight number, with passengers leaving the aircraft during the stop and then reboarding after security screening.
The stop is necessary because of the distance between Finland and Australia, as well as aircraft-range and crew-duty considerations. Finnair says the Bangkok stop is expected to last just under two hours. Passengers should follow airport staff instructions and check their travel documents and baggage arrangements before departure.
This distinction matters: the service is not a nonstop flight between Helsinki and Melbourne. Bangkok is a scheduled stop along the journey, rather than a separate aircraft connection for passengers continuing on the full route.
Airbus A350 to Operate the New Route
Finnair has confirmed that the route will be operated with its Airbus A350 long-haul aircraft. The airline's published information describes a cabin offering that includes Business Class, Premium Economy and Economy, giving passengers several options for the lengthy journey.
The new service also creates additional opportunities for passengers travelling between Europe and Australia. Travellers from European cities may connect through Helsinki, while passengers departing Melbourne can travel via Bangkok and Helsinki to reach destinations served by Finnair.
What the New Route Means for Travellers
Melbourne is Finnair's first destination in Australia. The airline expects the route to serve both leisure and business travellers, including Europeans visiting Australia and Australian passengers travelling to Finland, the Nordic region and other European destinations.
Bangkok also has a role beyond the technical stop: Finnair says passengers can book the relevant route segments separately, including travel between Bangkok and Melbourne, subject to availability and the airline's booking conditions.
For travellers planning a trip, it is worth checking the complete itinerary, scheduled stop duration, baggage rules and entry requirements before booking. Flight schedules can change, so the airline's timetable and booking confirmation should be treated as the final reference for an individual journey.
How to Check Flights and Book
Passengers can check dates, fares and the latest itinerary details through the official Finnair booking website. Confirm that the journey includes the Bangkok stop and review the arrival date in Melbourne, which may be the following calendar day because of the long journey and time-zone differences.
Travellers comparing different itineraries can also search flight options with Aviasales. Search results, prices and availability vary by date and booking conditions; always confirm the final itinerary with the airline or booking provider.
