Discover Airlines has retired its last Airbus A330-200, ending the use of the aircraft type on its scheduled long-haul services. The final aircraft, registered D-AXGE, completed its last commercial flight from Philadelphia to Frankfurt on October 28, marking the end of an important chapter in the Lufthansa Group leisure airline’s history.
The retirement comes as Discover Airlines prepares to introduce the Airbus A350-900 from 2027 and upgrade the cabins of its remaining Airbus A330-300 fleet.
Final A330-200 Flight Connects Philadelphia and Frankfurt
The final service was operated as flight 4Y51 from Philadelphia International Airport to Frankfurt Airport. The aircraft landed in Germany on the morning of October 28, bringing its commercial operation with Discover Airlines to a close.
The approximately 22-year-old aircraft, D-AXGE, had a special place in the airline’s history. It operated the company’s first passenger flight on July 24, 2021, when the carrier was still known as Eurowings Discover. That inaugural service connected Frankfurt with Mombasa in Kenya before continuing to Zanzibar in Tanzania.
The aircraft had previously flown for Qatar Airways before joining SunExpress Deutschland in 2016 and later becoming part of Discover Airlines’ fleet.
Discover Airlines Now Operates the A330-300 on Long-Haul Routes
Discover Airlines operated three Airbus A330-200 aircraft. With the retirement of the final example, its long-haul fleet is now centred on 15 Airbus A330-300 aircraft, according to the airline’s published fleet information.
Operating a more standardised long-haul fleet can simplify maintenance, crew training and spare-parts planning. It also allows an airline to concentrate its onboard product and operational procedures around a single aircraft variant while preparing for the introduction of a new generation of aircraft.
The three retired A330-200s are expected to be returned to their owners at Tarbes-Lourdes-Pyrénées Airport in France. Their subsequent use will depend on decisions by the aircraft owners.
Airbus A350-900 Expected to Join the Fleet in 2027
The next major fleet development is the planned arrival of the Airbus A350-900. Discover Airlines initially announced plans to introduce four A350-900 aircraft progressively from mid-2027 as part of its wider fleet expansion.
More recent reporting on October 29 indicates that the first aircraft is currently expected to join the fleet in June 2027. Calgary in Canada or Orlando in the United States are being considered for its initial regular long-haul deployment, although the first route has not been definitively confirmed.
The A350-900 offers a longer range and improved fuel efficiency compared with older-generation wide-body aircraft. Its capabilities could allow Discover Airlines to serve additional long-haul leisure destinations in the future, including markets in Central and South America, southern Africa and Southeast Asia.
Discover Airlines has also outlined plans for further A350 deliveries beyond the initial four aircraft, with the longer-term aim of expanding and renewing its intercontinental fleet.
A New “Ocean Blue” Cabin for the A330-300
The airline’s fleet strategy also includes a major cabin refurbishment programme for its Airbus A330-300 aircraft. The new long-haul cabin, named “Ocean Blue,” is designed to update the passenger experience before the A350 becomes a regular part of the fleet.
The announced configuration includes business class with a 1-2-1 seating layout, giving each business-class passenger direct access to the aisle, alongside a new premium economy cabin and an updated economy class.
The first refurbished A330-300 is expected to enter service in 2027, with the wider programme scheduled to continue progressively through mid-2028.
What the Fleet Change Means for Travellers
The retirement of the A330-200 does not mean Discover Airlines is withdrawing its long-haul services. Instead, the carrier is continuing to operate its network with A330-300 aircraft while preparing for the gradual introduction of the A350-900.
For passengers, the most visible changes are likely to come from the refurbished cabin interiors and the eventual deployment of the A350 on selected routes. The new aircraft may also create opportunities for the airline to expand its leisure network over time.
However, the precise timing of aircraft deliveries and route assignments remains subject to the airline’s operational plans. Travellers should check their booking details for the aircraft type scheduled for a particular flight, as equipment can change.
