American Airlines is making changes to several long-haul routes for the 2026–2027 winter season, affecting travel between the United States and popular European destinations. The adjustments include seasonal suspensions and changes to previously planned operating dates for selected Boeing 787 services.
The changes are based on schedule information reported by aviation industry publications. They do not mean that all affected routes have been permanently discontinued.
Dallas–Fort Worth to Barcelona
American Airlines is scheduled to suspend its seasonal service between Dallas–Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and Barcelona–El Prat Airport (BCN) from November 19, 2026, through March 2, 2027.
The route had been scheduled to operate daily using the Boeing 787-8. The suspension follows the seasonal pattern of the airline's transatlantic network, with service scheduled to return in March 2027.
Chicago–O'Hare to Madrid
The seasonal American Airlines service between Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD) and Madrid–Barajas Airport (MAD) is scheduled to pause from December 1, 2026, through March 3, 2027.
According to published schedule updates, the route is expected to resume on March 4, 2027. The winter pause therefore represents a seasonal interruption rather than a confirmed permanent route cancellation.
Philadelphia to Athens
American Airlines' scheduled Boeing 787-8 service between Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) and Athens International Airport (ATH) is listed as operating through October 23, 2026, rather than the previously planned November 16 end date.
This means the seasonal service is scheduled to finish earlier than originally filed. The schedule change alone does not establish that American Airlines has permanently withdrawn from the Philadelphia–Athens market.
What Travelers Should Know
Passengers planning winter trips between the United States and Europe should check their specific travel dates directly with American Airlines. Seasonal services can have different operating periods from year to year, and schedules may change after their initial publication.
Travelers should also distinguish between a route suspension, an earlier seasonal closing date and a permanent cancellation. These changes have different implications for future travel options.
